The Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” And Satan answered the Lord, “From roving about on the earth, and from walking back and forth across it.”

Appoint an evil man to testify against him! May an accuser stand at his right side!

But now the Lord my God has made me secure on all fronts; there is no adversary or dangerous threat.

The Lord brought against Solomon an enemy, Hadad the Edomite, a descendant of the Edomite king.

An adversary opposed Israel, inciting David to count how many warriors Israel had.

Now the day came when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord – and Satan also arrived among them.

Then Satan answered the Lord, “Is it for nothing that Job fears God?

So the Lord said to Satan, “All right, he is in your power; only preserve his life.”

So the Lord said to Satan, “All right then, everything he has is in your power. Only do not extend your hand against the man himself!” So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.

God also brought against Solomon another enemy, Rezon son of Eliada who had run away from his master, King Hadadezer of Zobah.

He was Israel’s enemy throughout Solomon’s reign and, like Hadad, caused trouble. He loathed Israel and ruled over Syria.

Again the day came when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also arrived among them to present himself before the Lord.

But Satan answered the Lord, “Skin for skin! Indeed, a man will give up all that he has to save his life!

So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord, and he afflicted Job with a malignant ulcer from the sole of his feet to the top of his head.

Next I saw Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, with Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him.

Then God’s anger was kindled because he went, and the angel of the Lord stood in the road to oppose him. Now he was riding on his donkey and his two servants were with him.

The angel of the Lord said to him, “Why have you beaten your donkey these three times? Look, I came out to oppose you because what you are doing is perverse before me.

But David said, “What do we have in common, you sons of Zeruiah? You are like my enemy today! Should anyone be put to death in Israel today? Don’t you realize that today I am king over Israel?”
