The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women – for the Hebrew women are vigorous; they give birth before the midwife gets to them!”

And because the midwives feared God, he made households for them.

When her labor was at its hardest, the midwife said to her, “Don’t be afraid, for you are having another son.”

While she was giving birth, one child put out his hand, and the midwife took a scarlet thread and tied it on his hand, saying, “This one came out first.”

But the midwives feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt had told them; they let the boys live.
