saying to them, “It is written, ‘My house will be a house of prayer,’ but you have turned it into a den of robbers!”

When harvest time came, he sent a slave to the tenants so that they would give him his portion of the crop. However, the tenants beat his slave and sent him away empty-handed.

But when the tenants saw him, they said to one another, ‘This is the heir; let’s kill him so the inheritance will be ours!’

Then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains. Those who are inside the city must depart. Those who are out in the country must not enter it,

So they began to question one another as to which of them it could possibly be who would do this.

Then one of them struck the high priest’s slave, cutting off his right ear.

Then a little later someone else saw him and said, “You are one of them too.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not!”

When day came, the council of the elders of the people gathered together, both the chief priests and the experts in the law. Then they led Jesus away to their council

So Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?” He replied, “You say so.”

When he learned that he was from Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him over to Herod, who also happened to be in Jerusalem at that time.

That very day Herod and Pilate became friends with each other, for prior to this they had been enemies.

As they led him away, they seized Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country. They placed the cross on his back and made him carry it behind Jesus.

[But Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.”] Then they threw dice to divide his clothes.

But the other rebuked him, saying, “Don’t you fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation?

And all those who knew Jesus stood at a distance, and the women who had followed him from Galilee saw these things.

Then he took it down, wrapped it in a linen cloth, and placed it in a tomb cut out of the rock, where no one had yet been buried.

The women who had accompanied Jesus from Galilee followed, and they saw the tomb and how his body was laid in it.

While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men stood beside them in dazzling attire.

The women were terribly frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead?

Now that very day two of them were on their way to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem.
