To the one who had said this, Jesus replied, “Who is my mother and who are my brothers?”

Other seeds fell on rocky ground where they did not have much soil. They sprang up quickly because the soil was not deep.

For whoever has will be given more, and will have an abundance. But whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him.

The seed sown on rocky ground is the person who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy.

But while everyone was sleeping, an enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and went away.

So the slaves of the owner came and said to him, ‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Then where did the weeds come from?’

When it was full, they pulled it ashore, sat down, and put the good fish into containers and threw the bad away.

And so they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his own house.”

But on Herod’s birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod,

Instructed by her mother, she said, “Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter.”

Now when Jesus heard this he went away from there privately in a boat to an isolated place. But when the crowd heard about it, they followed him on foot from the towns.

And after he sent the crowds away, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone.

Meanwhile the boat, already far from land, was taking a beating from the waves because the wind was against it.

When the disciples saw him walking on the water they were terrified and said, “It’s a ghost!” and cried out with fear.

Peter said to him, “Lord, if it is you, order me to come to you on the water.”

So he said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat, walked on the water, and came toward Jesus.

He answered them, “And why do you disobey the commandment of God because of your tradition?

And he replied, “Every plant that my heavenly Father did not plant will be uprooted.

But he did not answer her a word. Then his disciples came and begged him, “Send her away, because she keeps on crying out after us.”

“It is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs,” he said.
