An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were absolutely terrified.

At the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was named Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

But when John rebuked Herod the tetrarch because of Herodias, his brother’s wife, and because of all the evil deeds that he had done,

and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,

They were all amazed and began to say to one another, “What’s happening here? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!”

Simon answered, “Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing! But at your word I will lower the nets.”

So they motioned to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both boats, so that they were about to sink.

Then they said to him, “John’s disciples frequently fast and pray, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours continue to eat and drink.”

After looking around at them all, he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” The man did so, and his hand was restored.

“Do not judge, and you will not be judged; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven.

Then he came up and touched the bier, and those who carried it stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!”

At that very time Jesus cured many people of diseases, sicknesses, and evil spirits, and granted sight to many who were blind.

What did you go out to see? A man dressed in fancy clothes? Look, those who wear fancy clothes and live in luxury are in kings’ courts!

(Now all the people who heard this, even the tax collectors, acknowledged God’s justice, because they had been baptized with John’s baptism.

While he was still speaking, someone from the synagogue ruler’s house came and said, “Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the teacher any longer.”

Now Herod the tetrarch heard about everything that was happening, and he was thoroughly perplexed, because some people were saying that John had been raised from the dead,

(Now about five thousand men were there.) Then he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.”

Then a man from the crowd cried out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son – he is my only child!

Stay in that same house, eating and drinking what they give you, for the worker deserves his pay. Do not move around from house to house.

Now an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus, saying, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
