“Speak to the Israelites and tell them, ‘When you cross over the Jordan River into the land of Canaan,

These are the stipulations, statutes, and ordinances that Moses spoke to the Israelites after he had brought them out of Egypt,

his father and mother must seize him and bring him to the elders at the gate of his city.

Children of the third generation born to them may enter the assembly of the Lord.

His people have been unfaithful to him; they have not acted like his children – this is their sin. They are a perverse and deceitful generation.

This is the blessing Moses the man of God pronounced upon the Israelites before his death.

The king of Jericho received this report: “Note well! Israelite men have come here tonight to spy on the land.”

Joshua told the Israelites, “Come here and listen to the words of the Lord your God!”

Joshua summoned the twelve men he had appointed from the Israelites, one per tribe.

Now Jericho was shut tightly because of the Israelites. No one was allowed to leave or enter.

There, in the presence of the Israelites, Joshua inscribed on the stones a duplicate of the law written by Moses.

Joshua did as they said; he kept the Israelites from killing them

“Come to my aid so we can attack Gibeon, for it has made peace with Joshua and the Israelites.”

Then the whole army safely returned to Joshua at the camp in Makkedah. No one dared threaten the Israelites.

No city made peace with the Israelites (except the Hivites living in Gibeon); they had to conquer all of them,

No Anakites were left in Israelite territory, though some remained in Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod.

and all the cities of King Sihon of the Amorites who ruled in Heshbon, and ended at the Ammonite border.

But the Israelites did not conquer the Geshurites and Maacathites; Geshur and Maacah live among Israel to this very day.
