From where shall I get meat to give to this entire people, for they cry to me, ‘Give us meat, that we may eat!’

They said to the whole community of the Israelites, “The land we passed through to investigate is an exceedingly good land.

If you kill this entire people at once, then the nations that have heard of your fame will say,

But on the next day the whole community of Israelites murmured against Moses and Aaron, saying, “You have killed the Lord’s people!”

And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron in Mount Hor, by the border of the land of Edom. He said:

So Moses spoke to the people: “Arm men from among you for the war, to attack the Midianites and to execute the Lord’s vengeance on Midian.

the Gadites and the Reubenites came and addressed Moses, Eleazar the priest, and the leaders of the community. They said,

So the Gadites and the Reubenites replied to Moses, “Your servants will do as my lord commands.

Then the Gadites and the Reubenites answered, “Your servants will do what the Lord has spoken.

Then Moses gave a ruling to the Israelites by the word of the Lord: “What the tribe of the Josephites is saying is right.

This is what the Lord has commanded for Zelophehad’s daughters: ‘Let them marry whomever they think best, only they must marry within the family of their father’s tribe.

I furthermore admonished your judges at that time that they should pay attention to issues among your fellow citizens and judge fairly, whether between one citizen and another or a citizen and a resident foreigner.

Instruct these people as follows: ‘You are about to cross the border of your relatives the descendants of Esau, who inhabit Seir. They will be afraid of you, so watch yourselves carefully.
