Suddenly there was a severe earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descending from heaven came and rolled away the stone and sat on it.

He said to them, “Have you never read what David did when he was in need and he and his companions were hungry –

But they have no root in themselves and do not endure. Then, when trouble or persecution comes because of the word, immediately they fall away.

He goes to sleep and gets up, night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how.

He instructed them to take nothing for the journey except a staff – no bread, no bag, no money in their belts –

But many saw them leaving and recognized them, and they hurried on foot from all the towns and arrived there ahead of them.

He said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” When they found out, they said, “Five – and two fish.”

for they all saw him and were terrified. But immediately he spoke to them: “Have courage! It is I. Do not be afraid.”

After Jesus left there, he went to the region of Tyre. When he went into a house, he did not want anyone to know, but he was not able to escape notice.

If I send them home hungry, they will faint on the way, and some of them have come from a great distance.”

When he learned of this, Jesus said to them, “Why are you arguing about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Have your hearts been hardened?

He answered them, “You unbelieving generation! How much longer must I be with you? How much longer must I endure you? Bring him to me.”

Then, after he went into the house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why couldn’t we cast it out?”

After he sat down, he called the twelve and said to them, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.”

For I tell you the truth, whoever gives you a cup of water because you bear Christ’s name will never lose his reward.

Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him and said, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask.”

When he heard that it was Jesus the Nazarene, he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”

If anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here soon.’”

and said, “By what authority are you doing these things? Or who gave you this authority to do these things?”

Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one question. Answer me and I will tell you by what authority I do these things:
