and the lamp of God had not yet been extinguished. Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord as well; the ark of God was also there.

The people who did not die were struck with sores; the city’s cry for help went all the way up to heaven.

Even Saul went to his home in Gibeah. With him went some brave men whose hearts God had touched.

“So now, take your positions and watch this great thing that the Lord is about to do in your sight.

Then Saul struck down the Amalekites all the way from Havilah to Shur, which is next to Egypt.

Samuel replied, “If that is the case, then what is this sound of sheep in my ears and the sound of cattle that I hear?”

The soldiers told him what had been promised, saying, “This is what will be done for the man who can strike him down.”

The length of time that David lived in the Philistine countryside was a year and four months.

The Philistines assembled all their troops at Aphek, while Israel camped at the spring that is in Jezreel.

David retrieved everything the Amalekites had taken; he also rescued his two wives.

and Hebron; and for those in whatever other places David and his men had traveled.

When the residents of Jabesh Gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul,

David then grabbed his own clothes and tore them, as did all the men who were with him.

David also brought along the men who were with him, each with his family. They settled in the cities of Hebron.
