This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet:

and because lawlessness will increase so much, the love of many will grow cold.

Now after some days, when he returned to Capernaum, the news spread that he was at home.

And he was amazed because of their unbelief. Then he went around among the villages and taught.

and he would not permit anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts.

(For he knew that the chief priests had handed him over because of envy.)

as he spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from long ago,

Because of our God’s tender mercy the dawn will break upon us from on high

Another said, ‘I just got married, and I cannot come.’

You will be hated by everyone because of my name.

and were continually in the temple courts blessing God.

All things were created by him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created.

But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people.

Now because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began persecuting him.

However, no one spoke openly about him for fear of the Jewish leaders.

For this reason his parents said, “He is a mature adult, ask him.”)

The one who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.

Another sharp division took place among the Jewish people because of these words.

“Why wasn’t this oil sold for three hundred silver coins and the money given to the poor?”

for on account of him many of the Jewish people from Jerusalem were going away and believing in Jesus.
