and his clothes became radiantly white, more so than any launderer in the world could bleach them.

Then, after he went into the house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why couldn’t we cast it out?”

John said to him, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him because he was not following us.”

For I tell you the truth, whoever gives you a cup of water because you bear Christ’s name will never lose his reward.

I tell you the truth, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will never enter it.”

Jesus looked at them and replied, “This is impossible for mere humans, but not for God; all things are possible for God.”

For even the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Jesus said to them, “Aren’t you deceived for this reason, because you don’t know the scriptures or the power of God?

The expert in the law said to him, “That is true, Teacher; you are right to say that he is one, and there is no one else besides him.

And if the Lord had not cut short those days, no one would be saved. But because of the elect, whom he chose, he has cut them short.

“But in those days, after that suffering, the sun will be darkened and the moon will not give its light;

Stay alert, then, because you do not know when the owner of the house will return – whether during evening, at midnight, when the rooster crows, or at dawn –

For you will always have the poor with you, and you can do good for them whenever you want. But you will not always have me!

But Peter insisted emphatically, “Even if I must die with you, I will never deny you.” And all of them said the same thing.

He said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Take this cup away from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”

Then he came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Couldn’t you stay awake for one hour?

When he came again he found them sleeping; they could not keep their eyes open. And they did not know what to tell him.

Day after day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, yet you did not arrest me. But this has happened so that the scriptures would be fulfilled.”

The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find anything.

Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, “Have you no answer? What is this that they are testifying against you?”
