Then they said to him, “John’s disciples frequently fast and pray, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours continue to eat and drink.”

After looking around at them all, he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” The man did so, and his hand was restored.

“Do not judge, and you will not be judged; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven.

Then he came up and touched the bier, and those who carried it stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!”

At that very time Jesus cured many people of diseases, sicknesses, and evil spirits, and granted sight to many who were blind.

What did you go out to see? A man dressed in fancy clothes? Look, those who wear fancy clothes and live in luxury are in kings’ courts!

(Now all the people who heard this, even the tax collectors, acknowledged God’s justice, because they had been baptized with John’s baptism.

While he was still speaking, someone from the synagogue ruler’s house came and said, “Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the teacher any longer.”

Now Herod the tetrarch heard about everything that was happening, and he was thoroughly perplexed, because some people were saying that John had been raised from the dead,

(Now about five thousand men were there.) Then he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.”

Then a man from the crowd cried out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son – he is my only child!

Stay in that same house, eating and drinking what they give you, for the worker deserves his pay. Do not move around from house to house.

Now an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus, saying, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

But Jesus, realizing their thoughts, said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is destroyed, and a divided household falls.

Woe to you experts in religious law! You have taken away the key to knowledge! You did not go in yourselves, and you hindered those who were going in.”

“I tell you, whoever acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man will also acknowledge before God’s angels.

“When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, because a person more distinguished than you may have been invited by your host.

When one of those at the meal with Jesus heard this, he said to him, “Blessed is everyone who will feast in the kingdom of God!”

But when this son of yours came back, who has devoured your assets with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him!’
