Abner said to Joab, “Let the soldiers get up and fight before us.” Joab said, “So be it!”

The king chanted the following lament for Abner: “Should Abner have died like a fool?

Nathan replied to the king, “You should go and do whatever you have in mind, for the Lord is with you.”

That night the Lord told Nathan,

Nathan told David all these words that were revealed to him.

David took the golden shields that belonged to Hadadezer’s servants and brought them to Jerusalem.

Then Mephibosheth bowed and said, “Of what importance am I, your servant, that you show regard for a dead dog like me?”

In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it with Uriah.

He instructed the messenger as follows: “When you finish giving the battle report to the king,

Go to the king and speak to him in the following fashion.” Then Joab told her what to say.

Then the woman said, “Please permit your servant to speak to my lord the king about another matter.” He replied, “Tell me.”

Then a messenger came to David and reported, “The men of Israel are loyal to Absalom!”

The king’s servants replied to the king, “We will do whatever our lord the king decides.”

Then Absalom said to Ahithophel, “Give us your advice. What should we do?”

Hushai replied to Absalom, “Ahithophel’s advice is not sound this time.”

The king said to Shimei, “You won’t die.” The king vowed an oath concerning this.

So the king said to Barzillai, “Cross over with me, and I will take care of you while you are with me in Jerusalem.”
