For this reason a man will leave his father and mother,

In the house once again, the disciples asked him about this.

The man said to him, “Teacher, I have wholeheartedly obeyed all these laws since my youth.”

They were even more astonished and said to one another, “Then who can be saved?”

He said to them, “What do you want me to do for you?”

He threw off his cloak, jumped up, and came to Jesus.

Jesus said to them, “Have faith in God.

So he sent another slave to them again. This one they struck on the head and treated outrageously.

Jesus began to say to them, “Watch out that no one misleads you.

He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.”

They were distressed, and one by one said to him, “Surely not I?”

Peter said to him, “Even if they all fall away, I will not!”

He went away again and prayed the same thing.

Many gave false testimony against him, but their testimony did not agree.

During the feast it was customary to release one prisoner to the people, whomever they requested.

Then the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to release a prisoner for them, as was his custom.

(For he knew that the chief priests had handed him over because of envy.)

But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas instead.

They began to salute him: “Hail, king of the Jews!”

They brought Jesus to a place called Golgotha (which is translated, “Place of the Skull”).
