It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon,

The true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.

He was in the world, and the world was created by him, but the world did not recognize him.

But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.”

Now a man was there who had been disabled for thirty-eight years.

(Now the day on which Jesus made the mud and caused him to see was a Sabbath.)

Now a certain man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village where Mary and her sister Martha lived.

So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he remained in the place where he was for two more days.

The glory you gave to me I have given to them, that they may be one just as we are one –

(Now it was Caiaphas who had advised the Jewish leaders that it was to their advantage that one man die for the people.)

They replied, “If this man were not a criminal, we would not have handed him over to you.”

Then they shouted back, “Not this man, but Barabbas!” (Now Barabbas was a revolutionary.)

And so, because it was the Jewish day of preparation and the tomb was nearby, they placed Jesus’ body there.

Now Thomas (called Didymus), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came.

So they seized them and put them in jail until the next day (for it was already evening).

For the man, on whom this miraculous sign of healing had been performed, was over forty years old.

The patriarchs, because they were jealous of Joseph, sold him into Egypt. But God was with him,

So Moses was trained in all the wisdom of the Egyptians and was powerful in his words and deeds.

(For the Spirit had not yet come upon any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)

and was returning home, sitting in his chariot, reading the prophet Isaiah.
