While the people were filled with anticipation and they all wondered whether perhaps John could be the Christ,

But when John rebuked Herod the tetrarch because of Herodias, his brother’s wife, and because of all the evil deeds that he had done,

The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.”

But Jesus said to them, “I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns too, for that is what I was sent to do.”

Now Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, and the crowd was pressing around him to hear the word of God.

He saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gotten out of them and were washing their nets.

When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and lower your nets for a catch.”

Simon answered, “Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing! But at your word I will lower the nets.”

But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!”

But the news about him spread even more, and large crowds were gathering together to hear him and to be healed of their illnesses.

When Jesus perceived their hostile thoughts, he said to them, “Why are you raising objections within yourselves?

So Jesus said to them, “You cannot make the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them, can you?

Jesus was going through the grain fields on a Sabbath, and his disciples picked some heads of wheat, rubbed them in their hands, and ate them.

The experts in the law and the Pharisees watched Jesus closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath, so that they could find a reason to accuse him.

Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, is it lawful to do good on the Sabbath or to do evil, to save a life or to destroy it?”

After looking around at them all, he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” The man did so, and his hand was restored.

Now it was during this time that Jesus went out to the mountain to pray, and he spent all night in prayer to God.

When the centurion heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to him, asking him to come and heal his slave.

When they came to Jesus, they urged him earnestly, “He is worthy to have you do this for him,

Then he came up and touched the bier, and those who carried it stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!”
