saying to them, “It is written, ‘My house will be a house of prayer,’ but you have turned it into a den of robbers!”

But if we say, ‘From people,’ all the people will stone us, because they are convinced that John was a prophet.”

Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What should I do? I will send my one dear son; perhaps they will respect him.’

But when the tenants saw him, they said to one another, ‘This is the heir; let’s kill him so the inheritance will be ours!’

For the Son of Man is to go just as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!”

So they began to question one another as to which of them it could possibly be who would do this.

So Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those in authority over them are called ‘benefactors.’

And in his anguish he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.]

While he was still speaking, suddenly a crowd appeared, and the man named Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He walked up to Jesus to kiss him.

Then a little later someone else saw him and said, “You are one of them too.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not!”

and said, “If you are the Christ, tell us.” But he said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe,

Even Herod with his soldiers treated him with contempt and mocked him. Then, dressing him in elegant clothes, Herod sent him back to Pilate.

A third time he said to them, “Why? What wrong has he done? I have found him guilty of no crime deserving death. I will therefore flog him and release him.”

[But Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.”] Then they threw dice to divide his clothes.

But the other rebuked him, saying, “Don’t you fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation?

Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” And after he said this he breathed his last.

Now the Word became flesh and took up residence among us. We saw his glory – the glory of the one and only, full of grace and truth, who came from the Father.

So they asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not!” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No!”

John said, “I am the voice of one shouting in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”

John answered them, “I baptize with water. Among you stands one whom you do not recognize,
