He has done this to show mercy to our ancestors, and to remember his holy covenant –

that we, being rescued from the hand of our enemies, may serve him without fear,

a light, for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel.”

He went into all the region around the Jordan River, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

“Take these words to heart, for the Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men.”

Jesus said to him, “You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.”

You fools! Didn’t the one who made the outside make the inside as well?

So do not be overly concerned about what you will eat and what you will drink, and do not worry about such things.

No, I tell you! But unless you repent, you will all perish as well!

And if you haven’t been trustworthy with someone else’s property, who will give you your own?

Then he said to the man, “Get up and go your way. Your faith has made you well.”

Jesus also told this parable to some who were confident that they were righteous and looked down on everyone else.

For the Son of Man is to go just as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!”

“Simon, Simon, pay attention! Satan has demanded to have you all, to sift you like wheat,

Now there was a man named Joseph who was a member of the council, a good and righteous man.

And he will go as forerunner before the Lord in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers back to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready for the Lord a people prepared for him.”

Jesus answered, “You unbelieving and perverse generation! How much longer must I be with you and endure you? Bring your son here.”

“The one who listens to you listens to me, and the one who rejects you rejects me, and the one who rejects me rejects the one who sent me.”

But I will warn you whom you should fear: Fear the one who, after the killing, has authority to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him!

Nevertheless I must go on my way today and tomorrow and the next day, because it is impossible that a prophet should be killed outside Jerusalem.’
