Then the <sc>Lordsc> spoke to you from the middle of the fire; you heard speech but you could not see anything &#8211; only a voice was heard.<n id="1" />

<p class="bodytext">If a person has a stubborn, rebellious son who pays no attention to his father or mother, and they discipline him to no avail,<n id="1" />

<t /><p class="bodytext">When the <sc>Lordsc> heard you, he became angry and made this vow:<n id="1" />

Then you came back and wept before the <sc>Lordsc>, but he<n id="1" /> paid no attention to you whatsoever.<n id="2" />

Have a people ever heard the voice of God speaking from the middle of fire, as you yourselves have, and lived to tell about it?

<t /><p class="bodytext">&#8220;The Levites will call out to every Israelite<n id="1" /> with a loud voice:

All these blessings will come to you in abundance<n id="1" /> if you obey the <sc>Lordsc> your God:

When the <sc>Lordsc> heard you speaking to me, he<n id="1" /> said to me, &#8220;I have heard what these people have said to you &#8211; they have spoken well.

In your distress when all these things happen to you in the latter days,<n id="1" /> if you return to the <sc>Lordsc> your God and obey him<n id="2" />

From heaven he spoke to you in order to teach you, and on earth he showed you his great fire from which you also heard his words.<n id="1" />

Then, when you heard the voice from the midst of the darkness while the mountain was ablaze, all your tribal leaders and elders approached me.

But now, why should we die, because this intense fire will consume us! If we keep hearing the voice of the <sc>Lordsc> our God we will die!

Who is there from the entire human race<n id="1" /> who has heard the voice of the living God speaking from the middle of the fire as we have, and has lived?

Just like the nations the <sc>Lordsc> is about to destroy from your sight, so he will do to you<n id="1" /> because you would not obey him.<n id="2" />p>

You must follow the <sc>Lordsc> your God and revere only him; and you must observe his commandments, obey him, serve him, and remain loyal to him.

if you carefully obey<n id="1" /> him<n id="2" /> by keeping<n id="3" /> all these commandments that I am giving<n id="4" /> you today.

They must declare to the elders<n id="1" /> of his city, &#8220;Our son is stubborn and rebellious and pays no attention to what we say &#8211; he is a glutton and drunkard.&#8221;

So we cried out to the <sc>Lordsc>, the God of our ancestors, and he<n id="1" /> heard us and saw our humiliation, toil, and oppression.

Today you have declared the <sc>Lordsc> to be your God, and that you will walk in his ways, keep his statutes, commandments, and ordinances, and obey him.

You must obey him<n id="1" /> and keep his commandments and statutes that I am giving you today.&#8221;
