The chief priests and the experts in the law<n id="1" /> heard it and they considered how they could assassinate<n id="2" /> him, for they feared him, because the whole crowd was amazed by his teaching.

When Jesus saw that he had answered thoughtfully, he said to him, &#8220;You are not far from the kingdom of God.&#8221; Then no one dared any longer to question him.p>

Then<n id="1" /> some began to spit on him, and to blindfold him, and to strike him with their fists, saying, &#8220;Prophesy!&#8221; The guards also took him and beat<n id="2" /> him.p>

After Joseph<n id="1" /> bought a linen cloth<n id="2" /> and took down the body, he wrapped it in the linen and placed it in a tomb cut out of the rock.<n id="3" /> Then<n id="4" /> he rolled a stone across the entrance<n id="5" /> of the tomb.

And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in strips of cloth<n id="1" /> and laid him in a manger,<n id="2" /> because there was no place for them in the inn.<n id="3" />p>

<p class="bodytext">At<n id="1" /> the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was named Jesus, the name given by the angel<n id="2" /> before he was conceived in the womb.p>

When<n id="1" /> his parents<n id="2" /> saw him, they were overwhelmed. His<n id="3" /> mother said to him, &#8220;Child,<n id="4" /> why have you treated<n id="5" /> us like this? Look, your father and I have been looking for you anxiously.&#8221;<n id="6" />

But<n id="1" /> Jesus rebuked him:<n id="2" /> &#8220;Silence! Come out of him!&#8221;<n id="3" /> Then, after the demon threw the man<n id="4" /> down in their midst, he came out of him without hurting him.<n id="5" />

<p class="bodytext">The next morning<n id="1" /> Jesus<n id="2" /> departed and went to a deserted place. Yet<n id="3" /> the crowds were seeking him, and they came to him and tried to keep him from leaving them.

But<n id="1" /> since they found<n id="2" /> no way to carry him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof<n id="3" /> and let him down on the stretcher<n id="4" /> through the roof tiles<n id="5" /> right<n id="6" /> in front of Jesus.<n id="7" />

As<n id="1" /> the boy<n id="2" /> was approaching, the demon threw him to the ground<n id="3" /> and shook him with convulsions.<n id="4" /> But Jesus rebuked<n id="5" /> the unclean<n id="6" /> spirit, healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.

He<n id="1" /> went up to him<n id="2" /> and bandaged his wounds, pouring oil<n id="3" /> and wine on them. Then<n id="4" /> he put him on<n id="5" /> his own animal,<n id="6" /> brought him to an inn, and took care of him.

<t /><p class="bodytext">Now<n id="1" /> Jesus<n id="2" /> was praying in a certain place. When<n id="3" /> he stopped, one of his disciples said to him, &#8220;Lord, teach us to pray, just as John<n id="4" /> taught<n id="5" /> his disciples.&#8221;

So<n id="1" /> he got up and went to his father. But while he was still a long way from home<n id="2" /> his father saw him, and his heart went out to him;<n id="3" /> he ran and hugged<n id="4" /> his son<n id="5" /> and kissed him.

<t /><p class="bodytext">Now<n id="1" /> this was<n id="2" /> John&#8217;s<n id="3" /> testimony<n id="4" /> when the Jewish leaders<n id="5" /> sent<n id="6" /> priests and Levites from Jerusalem<n id="7" /> to ask him, &#8220;Who are you?&#8221;<n id="8" />

For this is the will of my Father &#8211; for everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him to have eternal life, and I will raise him up<n id="1" /> at the last day.&#8221;<n id="2" />p>

The one who had died came out, his feet and hands tied up with strips of cloth,<n id="1" /> and a cloth wrapped around his face.<n id="2" /> Jesus said to them, &#8220;Unwrap him<n id="3" /> and let him go.&#8221;p>

The one who rejects me and does not accept<n id="1" /> my words has a judge;<n id="2" /> the word<n id="3" /> I have spoken will judge him at the last day.

Jesus replied,<n id="1" /> &#8220;If anyone loves me, he will obey<n id="2" /> my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and take up residence with him.<n id="3" />

<p class="bodytext">Pilate told them,<n id="1" /> &#8220;Take him yourselves and pass judgment on him<n id="2" /> according to your own law!&#8221;<n id="3" /> The Jewish leaders<n id="4" /> replied,<n id="5" /> &#8220;We cannot legally put anyone to death.&#8221;<n id="6" />
