Now Joseph had been brought down to Egypt. 1  An Egyptian named Potiphar, an official of Pharaoh and the captain of the guard, 2  purchased him from 3  the Ishmaelites who had brought him there.

Pharaoh should do 1  this – he should appoint 2  officials 3  throughout the land to collect one-fifth of the produce of the land of Egypt 4  during the seven years of abundance.

They should gather all the excess food 1  during these good years that are coming. By Pharaoh’s authority 2  they should store up grain so the cities will have food, 3  and they should preserve it. 4

So Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Because God has enabled you to know all this, there is no one as wise and discerning 1  as you are!

Joseph went and told Pharaoh, “My father, my brothers, their flocks and herds, and all that they own have arrived from the land of Canaan. They are now 1  in the land of Goshen.”

So Joseph settled his father and his brothers. He gave them territory 1  in the land of Egypt, in the best region of the land, the land of Rameses, 2  just as Pharaoh had commanded.

Joseph said to the people, “Since I have bought you and your land today for Pharaoh, here is seed for you. Cultivate 1  the land.

When you gather in the crop, 1  give 2  one-fifth of it to Pharaoh, and the rest 3  will be yours for seed for the fields and for you to eat, including those in your households and your little children.”
