“Take a census of the whole community of Israelites, from twenty years old and upward, by their clans, ¹  everyone who can serve in the army of Israel.” ² 

¹ When the people complained, ²  it displeased ³  the Lord. When the Lord heard ⁴  it, his anger burned, ⁵  and so ⁶  the fire of the Lord ⁷  burned among them and consumed some of the outer parts of the camp.

For all the people have seen my glory and my signs that I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and yet have tempted ¹  me now these ten times, ²  and have not obeyed me, ³ 

Indeed, the people will rise up like a lioness, and like a lion raises himself up; they will not lie down until they eat their ¹  prey, and drink the blood of the slain.” ² 

So the Lord’s anger was kindled against the Israelites, and he made them wander in the wilderness for forty years, until all that generation that had done wickedly before ¹  the Lord was finished. ² 

Now these are the names of the men who are to help ¹  you: from ²  Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur;

These were the ones chosen ¹  from the community, leaders ²  of their ancestral tribes. ³  They were the heads of the thousands ⁴  of Israel.

These are the names of the sons of Aaron, the anointed ¹  priests, whom he consecrated ²  to minister as priests. ³ 

Moses gave the redemption money to Aaron and his sons, according to the word of the Lord, as the Lord had commanded Moses.

So the Amalekites and the Canaanites who lived in that hill country swooped ¹  down and attacked them ²  as far as Hormah. ³ 

One law and one custom must apply to you and to the resident foreigner who lives alongside you.’”

These are the waters of Meribah, because the Israelites contended with the Lord, and his holiness was maintained ¹  among them.

But God said to Balaam, “You must not go with them; you must not curse the people, ¹  for they are blessed.” ² 

God brought them ¹  out of Egypt. They have, as it were, the strength of a wild bull. ² 

and if all your armed men cross the Jordan before the Lord until he drives out his enemies from his presence
