So Pilate asked them, ¹  “Do you want me to release the king of the Jews for you?”

So Pilate spoke to them again, ¹  “Then what do you want me to do ²  with the one you call king of the Jews?”

He proclaimed, ¹  “One more powerful than I am is coming after me; I am not worthy ²  to bend down and untie the strap ³  of his sandals.

He replied, ¹  “Let us go elsewhere, into the surrounding villages, so that I can preach there too. For that is what I came out here to do.” ² 

But so that you may know ¹  that the Son of Man ²  has authority on earth to forgive sins,” – he said to the paralytic ³  –

No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; otherwise, the patch pulls away from it, the new from the old, and the tear becomes worse.

He also said to them, “A lamp ¹  isn’t brought to be put under a basket ²  or under a bed, is it? Isn’t it to be placed on a lampstand?

Immediately she hurried back to the king and made her request: ¹  “I want the head of John the Baptist on a platter immediately.”

So ¹  Peter said to Jesus, ²  “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us make three shelters ³  – one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”

After he sat down, he called the twelve and said to them, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.”

“Whoever welcomes ¹  one of these little children ²  in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.”

Then ¹  James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him and said, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask.”

While Jesus was teaching in the temple courts, he said, “How is it that the experts in the law ¹  say that the Christ ²  is David’s son? ³ 

When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. These things must happen, but the end is still to come. ¹ 

And if the Lord had not cut short those days, no one would be saved. But because of the elect, whom he chose, he has cut them ¹  short.

Because he wanted to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas for them. Then, ¹  after he had Jesus flogged, ²  he handed him over ³  to be crucified.

He told him, ¹  “See that you do not say anything to anyone, ²  but go, show yourself to a priest, and bring the offering that Moses commanded ³  for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.” ⁴ 

He said to them, “Isaiah prophesied correctly about you hypocrites, as it is written: ‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart ¹  is far from me.

But after turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan. You are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but on man’s.” ¹ 

Then ¹  Jesus ²  called the crowd, along with his disciples, and said to them, “If anyone wants to become my follower, ³  he must deny ⁴  himself, take up his cross, ⁵  and follow me.
