So he said,p> <p class="poetry">&#8220;Cursed<n id="1" /> be Canaan!<n id="2" />p> <p class="poetry">The lowest of slaves<n id="3" />p> <p class="poetry">he will be to his brothers.&#8221;p>

<t /><p class="bodytext">But Jacob lived in the land where his father had stayed,<n id="1" /> in the land of Canaan.<n id="2" /> p>

<p class="bodytext">So they went up from Egypt and came to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan.<n id="1" />

Ham, the father of Canaan,<n id="1" /> saw his father&#8217;s nakedness<n id="2" /> and told his two brothers who were outside.

<p class="bodytext">He also said,p> <p class="poetry">&#8220;Worthy of praise is<n id="1" /> the <sc>Lordsc>, the God of Shem!p> <p class="poetry">May Canaan be the slave of Shem!<n id="2" />p>

<p class="poetry">May God enlarge Japheth&#8217;s territory and numbers!<n id="1" />p> <p class="poetry">May he live<n id="2" /> in the tents of Shemp> <p class="poetry">and may Canaan be his slave!&#8221;p>

Abram settled in the land of Canaan, but Lot settled among the cities of the Jordan plain<n id="1" /> and pitched his tents next to Sodom.

Then Esau realized<n id="1" /> that the Canaanite women<n id="2" /> were displeasing to<n id="3" /> his father Isaac.

So Israel&#8217;s sons came to buy grain among the other travelers,<n id="1" /> for the famine was severe in the land of Canaan.p>

And Abram took his wife Sarai, his nephew<n id="1" /> Lot, and all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired<n id="2" /> in Haran, and they left for<n id="3" /> the land of Canaan. They entered the land of Canaan.p>

<t /><p class="bodytext">The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. (Now Ham was the father of Canaan.)<n id="1" />

I will give the whole land of Canaan &#8211; the land where you are now residing<n id="1" /> &#8211; to you and your descendants after you as a permanent<n id="2" /> possession. I will be their God.&#8221;p>

Then she<n id="1" /> died in Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan. Abraham went to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her.<n id="2" />p>

<p class="bodytext">After this Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave in the field of Machpelah next to Mamre (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan.

<p class="bodytext">So Isaac called for Jacob and blessed him. Then he commanded him, &#8220;You must not marry a Canaanite woman!<n id="1" />

<p class="bodytext">After he left Paddan Aram, Jacob came safely to the city of Shechem in the land of Canaan, and he camped near<n id="1" /> the city.

<p class="bodytext">Jacob and all those who were with him arrived at Luz (that is, Bethel)<n id="1" /> in the land of Canaan.<n id="2" />

<p class="bodytext">Esau took his wives from the Canaanites:<n id="1" /> Adah the daughter of Elon the Hittite, and Oholibamah the daughter of Anah and granddaughter<n id="2" /> of Zibeon the Hivite,

and Oholibamah bore Jeush, Jalam, and Korah. These were the sons of Esau who were born to him in the land of Canaan.p>

They replied, &#8220;Your servants are from a family of twelve brothers.<n id="1" /> We are the sons of one man in the land of Canaan. The youngest is with our father at this time,<n id="2" /> and one is no longer alive.&#8221;<n id="3" />p>
