Luke 22:26

NETBible

Not so with you; instead the one who is greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like the one who serves.

NIV ©

But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves.

NASB ©

"But it is not this way with you, but the one who is the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like the servant.

NLT ©

But among you, those who are the greatest should take the lowest rank, and the leader should be like a servant.

MSG ©

It's not going to be that way with you. Let the senior among you become like the junior; let the leader act the part of the servant.

BBE ©

But let it not be so with you; but he who is greater, let him become like the younger; and he who is chief, like a servant.

NRSV ©

But not so with you; rather the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like one who serves.

NKJV ©

"But not so among you; on the contrary, he who is greatest among you, let him be as the younger, and he who governs as he who serves.

NETBible

Not so with you; instead the one who is greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like the one who serves.

NET Notes

tn Grk “But you are not thus.”

tn Or “the ruler.”

sn And the leader like the one who serves. Leadership was not to be a matter of privilege and special status, but of service. All social status is leveled out by these remarks. Jesus himself is the prime example of the servant-leader.
