Acts 13:36

For David, after he had served ¹  God’s purpose in his own generation, died, ²  was buried with his ancestors, ³  and experienced ⁴  decay,

"For when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried with his fathers and his body decayed.

"For David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep, and was laid among his fathers and underwent decay;

Now this is not a reference to David, for after David had served his generation according to the will of God, he died and was buried, and his body decayed.

"David, of course, having completed the work God set out for him, has been in the grave, dust and ashes, a long time now.

Now David, having done God’s work for his generation, went to sleep, and was put with his fathers, and his body came to destruction:

For David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, died, was laid beside his ancestors, and experienced corruption;

"For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell asleep, was buried with his fathers, and saw corruption;

For David, after he had served ¹  God’s purpose in his own generation, died, ²  was buried with his ancestors, ³  and experienced ⁴  decay,

¹ tn The participle ὑπηρετήσας (Juphrethsa") is taken temporally.

² tn The verb κοιμάω (koimaw) literally means “sleep,” but it is often used in the Bible as a euphemism for the death of a believer.

³ tn Or “forefathers”; Grk “was gathered to his fathers” (a Semitic idiom).

⁴ tn Grk “saw,” but the literal translation of the phrase “saw decay” could be misunderstood to mean simply “looked at decay,” while here “saw decay” is really figurative for “experienced decay.” This remark explains why David cannot fulfill the promise.
