1 Corinthians 14:23-24

Context
14:23 So if the whole church comes together and all speak in tongues, and unbelievers or uninformed people enter, will they not say that you have lost your minds? 14:24 But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or uninformed person enters, he will be convicted by all, he will be called to account by all.

Isaiah 29:11-12

Context

29:11 To you this entire prophetic revelation 1  is like words in a sealed scroll. When they hand it to one who can read 2  and say, “Read this,” he responds, “I can’t, because it is sealed.” 29:12 Or when they hand the scroll to one who can’t read 3  and say, “Read this,” he says, “I can’t read.” 4

John 7:15

Context
7:15 Then the Jewish leaders 5  were astonished 6  and said, “How does this man know so much when he has never had formal instruction?” 7

Acts 4:13

Context

4:13 When they saw the boldness 8  of Peter and John, and discovered 9  that they were uneducated 10  and ordinary 11  men, they were amazed and recognized these men had been with Jesus.

[29:11]  1 tn Heb “vision” (so NASB, NIV, NRSV).

[29:11]  2 tn Heb “one who knows a/the scroll.”

[29:12]  3 tn Heb “and if the scroll is handed to one who does not know a scroll.”

[29:12]  4 tn Heb “I do not know a scroll.”

[7:15]  5 tn Or “the Jewish authorities”; Grk “the Jews.” Here the phrase refers to the Jewish authorities or leaders who were Jesus’ primary opponents. See the note on the phrase “the Jewish leaders” in v. 1.

[7:15]  6 tn Or “began to be astonished.” This imperfect verb could also be translated ingressively (“began to be astonished”), but for English stylistic reasons it is rendered as a simple past.

[7:15]  7 tn Grk “How does this man know learning since he has not been taught?” The implication here is not that Jesus never went to school (in all probability he did attend a local synagogue school while a youth), but that he was not the disciple of a particular rabbi and had not had formal or advanced instruction under a recognized rabbi (compare Acts 4:13 where a similar charge is made against Peter and John; see also Paul’s comment in Acts 22:3).

[4:13]  8 tn Or “courage.”

[4:13]  9 tn Or “and found out.”

[4:13]  10 sn Uneducated does not mean “illiterate,” that is, unable to read or write. Among Jews in NT times there was almost universal literacy, especially as the result of widespread synagogue schools. The term refers to the fact that Peter and John had no formal rabbinic training and thus, in the view of their accusers, were not qualified to expound the law or teach publicly. The objection is like Acts 2:7.

[4:13]  11 tn For the translation of ἰδιῶται (idiwtai) as “ordinary men” see L&N 27.26.
