1 Kings 8:46-53

Context

8:46 “The time will come when your people 1  will sin against you (for there is no one who is sinless!) and you will be angry with them and deliver them over to their enemies, who will take them as prisoners to their own land, 2  whether far away or close by. 8:47 When your people 3  come to their senses 4  in the land where they are held prisoner, they will repent and beg for your mercy in the land of their imprisonment, admitting, ‘We have sinned and gone astray; 5  we have done evil.’ 8:48 When they return to you with all their heart and being 6  in the land where they are held prisoner, 7  and direct their prayers to you toward the land you gave to their ancestors, your chosen city, and the temple I built for your honor, 8  8:49 then listen from your heavenly dwelling place to their prayers for help 9  and vindicate them. 10  8:50 Forgive all the rebellious acts of your sinful people and cause their captors to have mercy on them. 11  8:51 After all, 12  they are your people and your special possession 13  whom you brought out of Egypt, from the middle of the iron-smelting furnace. 14

8:52 “May you be attentive 15  to your servant’s and your people Israel’s requests for help and may you respond to all their prayers to you. 16  8:53 After all, 17  you picked them out of all the nations of the earth to be your special possession, 18  just as you, O sovereign Lord, announced through your servant Moses when you brought our ancestors out of Egypt.”

Daniel 9:11-19

Context

9:11 “All Israel has broken 21  your law and turned away by not obeying you. 22  Therefore you have poured out on us the judgment solemnly threatened 23  in the law of Moses the servant of God, for we have sinned against you. 24  9:12 He has carried out his threats 25  against us and our rulers 26  who were over 27  us by bringing great calamity on us – what has happened to Jerusalem has never been equaled under all heaven! 9:13 Just as it is written in the law of Moses, so all this calamity has come on us. Still we have not tried to pacify 28  the LORD our God by turning back from our sin and by seeking wisdom 29  from your reliable moral standards. 30  9:14 The LORD was mindful of the calamity, and he brought it on us. For the LORD our God is just 31  in all he has done, 32  and we have not obeyed him. 33

9:15 “Now, O Lord our God, who brought your people out of the land of Egypt with great power 34  and made a name for yourself that is remembered to this day – we have sinned and behaved wickedly. 9:16 O Lord, according to all your justice, 35  please turn your raging anger 36  away from your city Jerusalem, your holy mountain. For due to our sins and the iniquities of our ancestors, Jerusalem and your people are mocked by all our neighbors.

9:17 “So now, our God, accept 37  the prayer and requests of your servant, and show favor to 38  your devastated sanctuary for your own sake. 39  9:18 Listen attentively, 40  my God, and hear! Open your eyes and look on our desolated ruins 41  and the city called by your name. 42  For it is not because of our own righteous deeds that we are praying to you, 43  but because your compassion is abundant. 9:19 O Lord, hear! O Lord, forgive! O Lord, pay attention, and act! Don’t delay, for your own sake, O my God! For your city and your people are called by your name.” 44

[8:46]  1 tn Heb “they”; the referent (your people) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[8:46]  2 tn Heb “the land of the enemy.”

[8:47]  3 tn Heb “they”; the referent (your people) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[8:47]  4 tn Or “stop and reflect”; Heb “bring back to their heart.”

[8:47]  5 tn Or “done wrong.”

[8:48]  6 tn Or “soul.”

[8:48]  7 tn Heb “in the land of their enemies.”

[8:48]  8 tn Heb “your name.” See the note on the word “reputation” in v. 41.

[8:49]  9 tn Heb “their prayer and their request for help.”

[8:49]  10 tn Heb “and accomplish their justice.”

[8:50]  11 tn Heb “and forgive your people who have sinned against you, [forgive] all their rebellious acts by which they rebelled against you, and grant them mercy before their captors so they will show them mercy.”

[8:51]  12 tn Or “for.”

[8:51]  13 tn Heb “inheritance.”

[8:51]  14 tn The Hebrew term כּוּר (kur, “furnace,” cf. Akkadian ku„ru) is a metaphor for the intense heat of purification. A כּוּר was not a source of heat but a crucible (“iron-smelting furnace”) in which precious metals were melted down and their impurities burned away (see I. Cornelius, NIDOTTE 2:618-19). Thus Egypt served not as a place of punishment for the Israelites, but as a place of refinement to bring Israel to a place of submission to divine sovereignty.

[8:52]  15 tn Heb “May your eyes be open.”

[8:52]  16 tn Heb “to listen to them in all their calling out to you.”

[8:53]  17 tn Or “For.”

[8:53]  18 tn Heb “your inheritance.”

[8:2]  19 sn The festival. This was the Feast of Tabernacles, see Lev 23:34.

[8:2]  20 sn The month Ethanim. This would be September-October in modern reckoning.

[9:11]  21 tn Or “transgressed.” The Hebrew verb has the primary sense of crossing a boundary, in this case, God’s law.

[9:11]  22 tn Heb “by not paying attention to your voice.”

[9:11]  23 tn Heb “the curse and the oath which is written.” The term “curse” refers here to the judgments threatened in the Mosaic law (see Deut 28) for rebellion. The expression “the curse and the oath” is probably a hendiadys (cf. Num 5:21; Neh 10:29) referring to the fact that the covenant with its threatened judgments was ratified by solemn oath and made legally binding upon the covenant community.

[9:11]  24 tn Heb “him.”

[9:12]  25 tn Heb “he has fulfilled his word(s) which he spoke.”

[9:12]  26 tn Heb “our judges.”

[9:12]  27 tn Heb “who judged.”

[9:13]  28 tn Heb “we have not pacified the face of.”

[9:13]  29 tn Or “by gaining insight.”

[9:13]  30 tn Heb “by your truth.” The Hebrew term does not refer here to abstract truth, however, but to the reliable moral guidance found in the covenant law. See vv 10-11.

[9:14]  31 tn Or “righteous.”

[9:14]  32 tn Heb “in all his deeds which he has done.”

[9:14]  33 tn Heb “we have not listened to his voice.”

[9:15]  34 tn Heb “with a powerful hand.”

[9:16]  35 tn Or “righteousness.”

[9:16]  36 tn Heb “your anger and your rage.” The synonyms are joined here to emphasize the degree of God’s anger. This is best expressed in English by making one of the terms adjectival (cf. NLT “your furious anger”; CEV “terribly angry”).

[9:17]  37 tn Heb “hear.” Here the verb refers to hearing favorably, accepting the prayer and responding positively.

[9:17]  38 tn Heb “let your face shine.” This idiom pictures God smiling in favor. See Pss 31:16; 67:1; 80:3, 7, 19.

[9:17]  39 tn Heb “for the sake of my Lord.” Theodotion has “for your sake.” Cf. v. 19.

[9:18]  40 tn Heb “turn your ear.”

[9:18]  41 tn Heb “desolations.” The term refers here to the ruined condition of Judah’s towns.

[9:18]  42 tn Heb “over which your name is called.” Cf. v. 19. This expression implies that God is the owner of his city, Jerusalem. Note the use of the idiom in 2 Sam 12:28; Isa 4:1; Amos 9:12.

[9:18]  43 tn Heb “praying our supplications before you.”

[9:19]  44 tn Heb “for your name is called over your city and your people.” See the note on this expression in v 18.
