Colossians 1:25

1:25 I became a servant of the church according to the stewardship ⁶  from God – given to me for you – in order to complete ⁷  the word of God,

[1:11]  ¹ tn A continuation of the preceding idea: Grk “teaching, according to the gospel.” This use of the law is in accord with the gospel entrusted to Paul (cf. Rom 7:7-16; Gal 3:23-26). Because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, a new sentence was started here in the translation.

[1:11]  ² tn Grk “the gospel of the glory of the blessed God.”

[1:11]  ³ tn Grk “with which I was entrusted.” The translation is more in line with contemporary English style.

[9:15]  ⁴ tn Or “tool.”

[9:15]  ⁵ tn Grk “the sons of Israel.” In Acts, Paul is a minister to all nations, including Israel (Rom 1:16-17).

[1:25]  ⁶ tn BDAG 697 s.v. οἰκονομία 1.b renders the term here as “divine office.”

[1:25]  ⁷ tn See BDAG 828 s.v. πληρόω 3. The idea here seems to be that the apostle wants to “complete the word of God” in that he wants to preach it to every person in the known world (cf. Rom 15:19). See P. T. O’Brien, Colossians, Philemon (WBC), 82.
