Exodus 32:13

Context
32:13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel your servants, to whom you swore by yourself and told them, ‘I will multiply your descendants 1  like the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken about 2  I will give to your descendants, 3  and they will inherit it forever.’”

Deuteronomy 9:5

Context
9:5 It is not because of your righteousness, or even your inner uprightness, 4  that you have come here to possess their land. Instead, because of the wickedness of these nations the Lord your God is driving them out ahead of you in order to confirm the promise he 5  made on oath to your ancestors, 6  to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Deuteronomy 9:27

Context
9:27 Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; ignore the stubbornness, wickedness, and sin of these people.

Micah 7:20

Context

7:20 You will be loyal to Jacob

and extend your loyal love to Abraham, 7

which you promised on oath to our ancestors 8

in ancient times. 9

[32:13]  1 tn Heb “your seed.”

[32:13]  2 tn “about” has been supplied.

[32:13]  3 tn Heb “seed.”

[9:5]  4 tn Heb “uprightness of your heart” (so NASB, NRSV). The Hebrew word צְדָקָה (tsÿdaqah, “righteousness”), though essentially synonymous here with יֹשֶׁר (yosher, “uprightness”), carries the idea of conformity to an objective standard. The term יֹשֶׁר has more to do with an inner, moral quality (cf. NAB, NIV “integrity”). Neither, however, was grounds for the Lord’s favor. As he states in both vv. 4-5, the main reason he allowed Israel to take this land was the sinfulness of the Canaanites who lived there (cf. Gen 15:16).

[9:5]  5 tn Heb “the Lord.” See note on “he” in 9:3.

[9:5]  6 tn Heb “fathers.”

[7:20]  7 tn More literally, “You will extend loyalty to Jacob, and loyal love to Abraham.

[7:20]  8 tn Heb “our fathers.” The Hebrew term refers here to more distant ancestors, not immediate parents.

[7:20]  9 tn Heb “which you swore [or, “pledged”] to our fathers from days of old.”
