Exodus 33:20-23

• [Exo 33:22] By Faith We Find The Place Above

  By faith we find the place above, The Rock that rent in twain; Beneath the shade of divine love, And in the clefts remain. Jesus, to Thy dear wounds we flee, We sink into Thy side; Assured that all who trust in Thee Shall evermore abide. Then let the thundering trumpet sound, The latest lightning glare, The mountains melt, the solid ground Dissolve as liquid air. The huge celestial bodies roll, Amidst that general fire, And shrivel as a parchment scroll, And all in smoke expire! Yet still the Lord, the Savior reigns, When nature is destroyed, And no created thing remains Throughout the flaming void. Sublime upon His azure throne, He speaks the almighty word; His fiat is obeyed! ’tis done; And Paradise restored. So be it! let this system end, This ruinous earth and skies, The new Jerusalem descend, The new creation rise! Thy power omnipotent assume, Thy brightest majesty! And when Thou dost in glory come, My Lord, remember me! Woe to the men on earth who dwell, Nor dread the Almighty’s frown, When God doth all His wrath reveal, And shower his judgments down! Sinners, expect those heaviest showers, To meet your God prepare; For, lo! the seventh angel pours His phial in the air. Lo! from their seats the mountains leap, The mountains are not found; Transported far into the deep, And in the ocean drowned. Who then shall live, and face the throne, And face the Judge severe?   Come, O thou Traveler unknown, Whom still I hold, but cannot see! My company before is gone, And I am left alone with Thee; With Thee all night I mean to stay, And wrestle till the break of day. I need not tell Thee who I am, My misery and sin declare; Thyself hast called me by my name, Look on Thy hands, and read it there; But who, I ask Thee, who art Thou? Tell me Thy name, and tell me now. In vain Thou strugglest to get free, I never will unloose my hold! Art Thou the Man that died for me? The secret of Thy love unfold; Wrestling, I will not let Thee go, Till I Thy name, Thy nature know. Wilt Thou not yet to me reveal Thy new, unutterable Name? • [Gen 32:26] Lord, I Cannot Let Thee Go

  Lord, I cannot let Thee go, [originally, Nay, I cannot let Thee go] Till a blessing Thou bestow: Do not turn away Thy face, Mine’s an urgent, pressing case. Dost Thou ask me who I am? Ah! my Lord, Thou know’st my name; Yet the question gives a plea To support my suit with Thee. Thou didst once a wretch behold, In rebellion blindly bold, Scorn Thy grace, Thy power defy: That poor rebel, Lord, was I. Once a sinner, near despair, Sought Thy mercy seat by prayer; Mercy heard, and set him free: Lord, that mercy came to me. Many days have passed since then, Many changes I have seen; Yet have been upheld till now; Who could hold me up but Thou? • [Gen 32:26] My God, I Know, I Feel Thee Mine

  My God! I know, I feel Thee mine, And will not quit my claim, Till all I have is lost in Thine, And all renewed I am. I hold Thee with a trembling hand, But will not let Thee go, Till steadfastly by faith I stand, And all Thy goodness know. When shall I see the welcome hour, That plants my God in me! Spirit of health, and life, and power, And perfect liberty! Jesus, Thine all victorious love Shed in my heart abroad; Then shall my feet no longer rove, Rooted and fixed in God. Love only can the conquest win, The strength of sin subdue, (My own unconquerable sin) And form my soul anew. Love can bow down the stubborn neck, The stone to flesh convert, Soften, and melt, and pierce, and break An adamantine heart. O that in me the sacred fire Might now begin to glow, Burn up the dross of base desire, And make the mountains flow! O that it now from heaven might fall, And all my sins consume! Come, Holy Ghost, for Thee I call, Spirit of burning, come! Refining fire, go through my heart, Illuminate my soul; Scatter Thy life through every part, And sanctify the whole. No longer then my heart shall mourn, While, purified by grace, I only for His glory burn, And always see His face. My steadfast soul, from falling free, Shall then no longer move; But Christ be all the world to me, And all my heart be love.

  Shepherd divine, our wants relieve In this our evil day, To all Thy tempted followers give The power to watch and pray. Long as our fiery trials last, Long as the cross we bear, O let our souls on Thee be cast In never ceasing prayer! The Spirit of interceding grace Give us in faith to claim; To wrestle till we see Thy face, And know Thy hidden Name.
