John 11:39

11:39 Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” ¹  Martha, the sister of the deceased, ²  replied, “Lord, by this time the body will have a bad smell, ³  because he has been buried ⁴  four days.” ⁵

5:43 He strictly ordered that no one should know about this, ⁶  and told them to give her something to eat.

Luke 7:15

7:15 So ⁷  the dead man ⁸  sat up and began to speak, and Jesus ⁹  gave him back ¹⁰  to his mother.

The statement made by Martha is extremely significant for understanding what actually took place. There is no doubt that Lazarus had really died, because the decomposition of his body had already begun to take place, since he had been dead for four days.

[7:15]  ⁷ tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “so” to indicate the result of Jesus’ command.
