[6:16]  1 tn Heb “the people.”

[6:16]  2 tn Or “the shout.”

[6:16]  3 tn Heb “for the Lord has given to you the city.” The verbal form is a perfect, probably indicating certitude here.

[6:2]  4 tn Heb “I have given into your hand Jericho.” The Hebrew verb נָתַתִּי (natatti, “I have given”) is probably best understood as a perfect of certitude, indicating the certainty of the action. The Hebrew pronominal suffix “your” is singular, being addressed to Joshua as the leader and representative of the nation. To convey to the modern reader what is about to happen and who is doing it, the translation “I am about to defeat Jericho for you” has been used.

[1:2]  5 tn Heb “house.” The Hebrew noun בַּיִת (bayit, “house”) is often used in reference to the temple of Yahweh (BDB 108 s.v. 1.a). This is also frequent elsewhere in Ezra and Nehemiah (e.g., Ezra 1:3, 4, 5, 7; 2:68; 3:8, 9, 11, 12; 4:3; 6:22; 7:27; 8:17, 25, 29, 30, 33, 36; 9:9; 10:1, 6, 9).

[27:5]  7 tn Heb “by my great power and my outstretched arm.” Again “arm” is symbolical for “strength.” Compare the similar expression in 21:5.

[27:5]  8 sn See Dan 4:17 for a similar statement.

[29:20]  9 tn Heb “for which he worked,” referring to the assault on Tyre (v. 18).

[2:38]  10 tn Aram “the sons of man.”

[2:38]  11 tn Aram “the beasts of the field.”

[2:38]  12 tn Aram “hand.”

[4:17]  13 tc The present translation follows an underlying reading of עַל־דִּבְרַת (’al-divrat, “so that”) rather than MT עַד־דִּבְרַת (’ad-divrat, “until”).

[4:17]  14 tn Aram “the kingdom of man”; NASB “the realm of mankind”; NCV “every kingdom on earth.”
