Hebrews 3:16-19

Context
3:16 For which ones heard and rebelled? Was it not all who came out of Egypt under Moses’ leadership? 32  3:17 And against whom was God 33  provoked for forty years? Was it not those who sinned, whose dead bodies fell in the wilderness? 34  3:18 And to whom did he swear they would never enter into his rest, except those who were disobedient? 3:19 So 35  we see that they could not enter because of unbelief.

[6:30]  1 tn Grk “grass of the field.”

[6:30]  2 tn Grk “into the oven.” The expanded translation “into the fire to heat the oven” has been used to avoid misunderstanding; most items put into modern ovens are put there to be baked, not burned.

[6:30]  3 sn The phrase even more is a typical form of rabbinic argumentation, from the lesser to the greater. If God cares for the little things, surely he will care for the more important things.

[8:26]  4 tn Grk “And.” Here καί (kai) has been translated as “but” to indicate the contrast present in this context.

[8:26]  5 tn Or “commanded” (often with the implication of a threat, L&N 33.331).

[8:26]  6 sn Who has authority over the seas and winds is discussed in the OT: Ps 104:3; 135:7; 107:23-30. When Jesus rebuked the winds and the sea he was making a statement about who he was.

[16:8]  7 tn Or “becoming aware of it.”

[16:8]  8 tn Grk “Those of little faith.”

[16:8]  9 tn Or “discussing.”

[9:19]  10 tn Grk “And answering, he said to them.” The participle ἀποκριθείς (apokriqeis) is redundant, but the phrasing of the sentence was modified slightly to make it clearer in English.

[9:19]  11 tn Grk “O.” The marker of direct address, (w), is functionally equivalent to a vocative and is represented in the translation by “you.”

[9:19]  12 tn Or “faithless.”

[9:19]  13 tn Grk “how long.”

[9:19]  14 tn Or “put up with.” See Num 11:12; Isa 46:4.

[9:19]  15 sn The pronouns you…you are plural, indicating that Jesus is speaking to a group rather than an individual.

[9:41]  16 tn Grk “And answering, Jesus said.” This is redundant in contemporary English and has been simplified to “Jesus answered.” Here δέ (de) has not been translated.

[9:41]  17 tn Grk “O.” The marker of direct address, (w), is functionally equivalent to a vocative and is represented in the translation by “you.”

[9:41]  18 tn Or “faithless.”

[9:41]  19 tn Grk “how long.”

[9:41]  20 tn Or “and put up with.” See Num 11:12; Isa 46:4.

[9:41]  21 sn The pronouns you…you are plural, indicating that Jesus is speaking to a group rather than an individual.

[24:25]  22 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “so” to indicate the implied result of the disciples’ inability to believe in Jesus’ resurrection.

[24:25]  23 tn Grk “O,” an interjection used both in address and emotion (BDAG 1101 s.v. 1).

[24:25]  24 tn The word “people” is not in the Greek text, but is supplied to complete the interjection.

[24:25]  25 sn The rebuke is for failure to believe the promise of scripture, a theme that will appear in vv. 43-47 as well.

[24:25]  26 tn On the syntax of this infinitival construction, see BDAG 364-65 s.v. ἐπί 6.b.

[20:27]  27 tn Or “Extend” or “Reach out.” The translation “put” or “reach out” for φέρω (ferw) here is given in BDAG 1052 s.v. 4.

[20:27]  28 tn Grk “see.” The Greek verb ἴδε (ide) is often used like its cognate ἰδού (idou) in Hellenistic Greek (which is “used to emphasize the …importance of someth.” [BDAG 468 s.v. ἰδού 1.b.ε]).

[20:27]  29 tn Or “reach out” or “put.”

[20:27]  30 tn The word “it” is not in the Greek text but is implied. Direct objects were often omitted in Greek when clear from the context.

[20:27]  31 tn Grk “and do not be unbelieving, but believing.”

[3:16]  32 tn Grk “through Moses.”

[3:17]  33 tn Grk “he”; in the translation the referent (God) has been specified for clarity.

[3:17]  34 sn An allusion to God’s judgment pronounced in Num 14:29, 32.

[3:19]  35 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “So” to indicate a summary or conclusion to the argument of the preceding paragraph.
