  O Lord, our Father, shall we be confounded Who, though by trials and woes surrounded, On Thee alone for help are still relying, To Thee are crying? Lord, put to shame Thy foes who breathe defiance And vainly make their might their sole reliance; In mercy turn to us, the poor and stricken, Our hope to quicken. Be Thou our Helper and our strong Defender; Speak to our foes and cause them to surrender. Yea, long before their plans have been completed, They are defeated. ’Tis vain to trust in man; for Thou, Lord, only Art the Defense and Comfort of the lonely. With Thee to lead, the battle shall be glorious And we victorious. Thou art our Hero, all our foes subduing; Save Thou Thy little flock they are pursuing.   At all times praise the Lord; His promises are sure; What if thou doubt? His steadfast Word Unchanging shall endure. Praise Him when skies are bright, And gladness fills thy days; Heav’n shames thee with its glorious light, And calls thee to His praise. Praise Him when clouds are dark; True faith waits not to prove; Tho’ hope no bright’ning gleam may mark, His meaning still is love. Praise Him when drear and lone The shadows ’round thee fall, No eye upon Thy sins but One— Fear not, He pardons all. Praise Him when home is sweet, As tho’ we ne’er should part; But pray—while kindred spirits meet— Pray for a thoughtful heart. Praise Him when far away On mountain or on sea; Each place is home to them who pray; The Father guardeth thee. Praise Him when joyful songs The saints on earth unite, In sacred chorus, with the throngs Of angels in the height. At all times praise the Lord; His promises are sure; Fear not, doubt not; His steadfast Word Unchanging shall endure.

  I’ll bless the Lord from day to day; How good are all His ways! Ye humble souls that use to pray, Come, help my lips to praise. Sing to the honor of His Name, How a poor sufferer cried, Nor was his hope exposed to shame, Nor was his suit denied. When threatening sorrows round me stood, And endless fears arose, Like the loud billows of a flood, Redoubling all my woes; I told the Lord my sore distress, With heavy groans and tears; He gave my sharpest torments ease, And silenced all my fears. O sinners, come and taste His love, Come, learn His pleasant ways; And let your own experience prove The sweetness of His grace. He bids His angels pitch their tents Round where His children dwell; What ills their heav’nly care prevents No earthly tongue can tell. O love the Lord, ye saints of His; His eye regards the just: How richly blessed their portion is Who make the Lord their trust! Young lions, pinched with hunger, roar And famish in the wood; But God supplies His holy poor With every needful good.

  My song shall bless the Lord of all, My praise shall climb to His abode; Thee, Savior, by that name I call, The great Supreme, the mighty God. Without beginning, or decline, Object of faith, and not of sense; Eternal ages saw Him shine, He shines eternal ages hence. As much, when in the manger laid, Almighty Ruler of the sky; As when the six days’ works He made, Filled all the morning-stars with joy. Of all the crowns Jehovah bears, Salvation is His dearest claim; That gracious sound well-pleased He hears, And owns Emmanuel for His name. A cheerful confidence I feel, My well-placed hopes with joy I see; My bosom glows with heav’nly zeal To worship Him Who died for me. As man, He pities my complaint, His pow’r and truth are all divine; He will not fail, He cannot faint, Salvation’s sure, and must be mine.

  Clap your hands, ye people all, Praise the God on Whom ye call; Lift your voice, and shout His praise, Triumph in His sovereign grace! Glorious is the Lord most High, Terrible in majesty; He His sovereign sway maintains, King o’er all the earth He reigns. Jesus is gone up on high, Takes His seat above the sky: Shout the angel-choirs aloud, Echoing to the trump of God. Sons of earth, the triumph join, Praise Him with the host divine; Emulate the heavenly powers, Their victorious Lord is ours. Shout the God enthroned above, Trumpet forth His conquering love; Praises to our Jesus sing, Praises to our glorious King! Power is all to Jesus given, Power o’er hell, and earth, and Heav’n! Power He now to us imparts; Praise Him with believing hearts. Wonderful in saving power, Him let all our hearts adore; Earth and Heav’n repeat the cry, “Glory be to God most High!”

  O for a shout of sacred joy To God the sov’reign King! Let ev’ry land their tongues employ, And hymns of triumph sing. Jesus our God ascends on high, His heav’nly guards around Attend Him rising through the sky, With trumpets’ joyful sound. While angels shout and praise their King, Let mortals learn their strains; Let all the earth His honors sing; O’er all the earth He reigns.   A shout of mighty triumph Through nature’s realm is heard, A shout which calls creation To hail th’Incarnate Word. Away with clouds and darkness! All hail, thrice blessèd morn; Sing out with joy, ye mortals, For Jesus Christ is born! Is this, ye holy shepherds, The mighty newborn King? This Child, so sweet and gentle, Can He such rapture bring? O yes! He comes, the Savior Of sinful earth forlorn; Then shout with joy, ye mortals, For Jesus Christ is born!   Lord, it belongs not to my care Whether I die or live; To love and serve Thee is my share, And this Thy grace must give. If life be long, I will be glad, That I may long obey; If short, yet why should I be sad To welcome endless day? Christ leads me through no darker rooms Than He went through before; He that unto God’s kingdom comes Must enter by this door. Come, Lord, when grace hath made me meet Thy blessèd face to see; For if Thy work on earth be sweet What will Thy glory be! Then I shall end my sad complaints And weary sinful days, And join with the triumphant saints That sing my Savior’s praise.
