(See on 2Sa 8:3-14). In 2Sa 8:4 David is said to have taken seven hundred horsemen, whereas here it is said that he took seven thousand. This great discrepancy in the text of the two narratives seems to have originated with a transcriber in confounding the two Hebrew letters which indicate the numbers, and in neglecting to mark or obscure the points over one of them. We have no means of ascertaining whether seven hundred or seven thousand be the more correct. Probably the former should be adopted [DAVIDSON'S HERMENUTICS].

The parallel record (2Sa 8:4) says David took seven hundred horsemen instead of seven thousand. The other numbers in the two verses all agree. Apparently there has been a copyist error in one of them, and the correct reading is probably the one given here, being more in line with the others."

David : The words wyakker Dawid eth col haraichev , should be rendered, ""and David disjointed all the chariots;""which is nearly the rendering of the LXX, και παραλυσε Δανιδ παντα τα αρματα . To have houghed the horses would have been both unreasonable and inhuman; for, as he had gained so complete a victory, there was no danger of their falling into the hands of the enemy; and if he did not choose to keep them, which indeed the law would not permit, he ought to have killed them outright., houghed, Deu 17:16; Jos 11:6, Jos 11:9; Psa 20:7, Psa 33:16, Psa 33:17

Footmen. Hebrew may well signify, "1000 chariot-horses and 7000 men who mounted the chariots and the horses." We only find 1700 horsemen, 2 Kings viii. 4. But soon after it is added, David houghed all the chariot-horses. (Calmet) ---

They were thus rendered useless. The king was forbidden to keep many horses. (Du Hamel)
