Five divisions of the guard under their five captains are distinguished here. Three of the five divisions "enter in"on the Sabbath; the other two "go forth"on the Sabbath 2Ki 11:7. By the former phrase seems to be meant the mounting guard at the royal palace (the "king’ s house,"where Athaliah then was); by the latter the serving of escort to the sovereign beyond the palace bounds. Jehoiada orders that of those whose business it would be to guard the palace on the ensuing Sabbath, one company or cohort should perform that task in the ordinary way, while another should watch the gate of Sur - or better, "the gate of the foundation"2Ch 23:5 - that by which the palace was usually quitted for the temple, and a third should watch another of the palace gates, called "the gate of the guard"(see 2Ki 11:19). The two companies whose proper business it would be to serve as the royal escort beyond the palace walls, he orders to enter the temple, and surround the person of the young king.

2Ki 11:6

That it be not broken down - The one word in the original text of which this is a translation occurs nowhere else; and its meaning is very doubtful.

2Ki 11:8

Within the ranges - Rather, "within the ranks."If anyone tried to break through the soldiers’ ranks to the king, or even to disturb their order, he was to be immediately slain.

Poole: 2Ki 11:8 - -- When you have set your watches and guards, all the rest of you shall draw near to the king to preserve his royal person from all assaults and danger...

When you have set your watches and guards, all the rest of you shall draw near to the king to preserve his royal person from all assaults and dangers.

The ranges or fences , i.e. the walls wherewith the courts of the temple were environed: see 2Ki 11:15 . Or, your ranks , or order . If any of Athaliah’ s guards shall attempt to break in upon you, or within your bounds.

Be ye with the king as he goeth out and as he cometh in whether the king shall go out of the temple, to offend or subdue his enemies, or retire hither to defend himself, do you always accompany him.

Temple, to cause confusion, Syriac, &c. The court of the priests, (Ezechiel xli 9.) and that of Israel, (Josephus, [Antiquities?] viii. 4.) were separated by walls, beyond which strangers were not allowed to pass. (Calmet) ---

Slain, being first cast out, ver. 15. (Menochius) ---

Great respect is due to holy places, and hence comes the privilege of sanctuaries. (Worthington)

Gill: 2Ki 11:8 - -- And ye shall compass the king round about, every man with his weapons in his hand,.... Afterwards given them, 2Ki 11:10, and he that cometh within ...

And ye shall compass the king round about, every man with his weapons in his hand,.... Afterwards given them, 2Ki 11:10,

and he that cometh within the ranges, let him be slain; any strange man that was not of them, that came into the ranks in which they were formed, was to be put to death as a spy, who might go and inform the queen what was doing; according to Jarchi, the word for "ranges" signifies the place through which the king went from his own house to the house of God d; and here it seems the guards were placed:

and be ye with the king as he goeth out and as he cometh in when brought forth to be crowned and anointed, and returned again.
