burggrave, n. [G. burggraf; burg fortress + graf count: cf. D. burggraaf, F. burgrave. See Margrave.].

Originally, one appointed to the command of a burg (fortress or castle); but the title afterward became hereditary, with a domain attached. [1913 Webster]
