Either of two small marine fishes formerly classified in the family Salmonidæ , now within the smelt family Osmeridae : Mallotus villosus , very abundant on the coasts of Greenland, Iceland, Newfoundland, and Alaska; or Mallotus catervarius , found in the North Pacific.
