12:23 The following is a record of the armed warriors who came with their leaders and joined David in Hebron in order to make David king in Saul’s place, in accordance with the Lord’s decree: ² 

1 Chronicles 11:3

11:3 When all the leaders ³  of Israel came to the king at Hebron, David made an agreement ⁴  with them in Hebron before the Lord. They anointed ⁵  David king over Israel, just as the Lord had announced through Samuel. ⁶ 

1 Chronicles 12:38

12:38 All these men were warriors who were ready to march. ⁷  They came to Hebron to make David king over all Israel by acclamation; ⁸  all the rest of the Israelites also were in agreement that David should become king. ⁹ 

[11:1]  ¹ tn Heb “look, your bone and your flesh [are] we.”

[12:23]  ² tn Heb “these are the numbers of the heads of the forces armed for battle [who] came to David in Hebron to turn over the kingdom of Saul to him according to the mouth of the Lord.”

[11:3]  ³ tn Heb “elders.”

[11:3]  ⁴ tn Or “covenant.”

[11:3]  ⁵ tn Or “They poured olive oil on David to designate him as king.”

[11:3]  ⁶ tn Heb “according to the word of the Lord by the hand of Samuel.”

[12:38]  ⁴ tc Heb “all these [were] men of war, helpers of the battle line.” The present translation assumes an emendation of עֹדְרֵי (’odÿrey, “helpers of”) to עֹרְכֵי, (’orÿkhey, “prepared for”).

[12:38]  ⁵ tn Heb “with a complete heart they came to Hebron to make David king over all Israel.”

[12:38]  ⁶ tn Heb “and also all the rest of Israel [was of] one mind to make David king.”
