1 Chronicles 18:4

18:4

1,000 ... 7,000 .... 20,000 <0505 07651> [seven thousand.]

[seven hundred. David.]

The words {wyakker Dawid eth col haraichev,} should be rendered, "and David disjointed all the chariots;" which is nearly the rendering of the LXX., [kai paraluse David panta ta armata.] To have houghed the horses would have been both unreasonable and inhuman; for, as he had gained so complete a victory, there was no danger of their falling into the hands of the enemy; and if he did not choose to keep them, which indeed the law would not permit, he ought to have killed them outright.

cut the hamstrings <06131> [houghed.]

chariots ............... hundred .... chariot horses <07393 03967> [an hundred chariots.]

1 Chronicles 19:18

19:18

fled before Israel <05127 06440 03478> [fled before Israel.]

7,000 ..... 40,000 <07651 0505> [seven thousand.]

In the parallel passage, "the men of seven hundred chariots;" which difference probably arose from mistaking [N–wn,] {noon final}, which stands for 700, for [Zayin,] {zayin,} with a dot above, which denotes 7,000, or vice versa: the great similarity of these letters might easily cause the one to be mistaken for the other.

<0376> [footmen.]

If these troops were as we have suppose, a kind of dismounted cavalry, the terms footmen and horsemen might be indifferently applied to them.

[horsemen.]

1 Chronicles 21:5

21:5

1,100,000 ....... 470,000 <0505> [a thousand.]

The Syriac has 800,000 as in the parallel passage of Samuel.

1 Chronicles 22:14

22:14

[trouble. or, poverty.]

100,000 ..... 1,000,000 <03967 0505> [an hundred thousand.]

This, at 5,075œ. 15s. 7«d. the talent, would amount to the sum of 507,578,125œ.

100,000 talents .... 1,000,000 talents ... silver <0505 03603 03701> [thousand thousand talents of silver.]

This, at 353Å“. 11s. 10d. the talent, would amount to 353,591,666Å“. 13s. 4d.; and both sums would amount to the immense sum of 868,169,791Å“. 13s. 4d.

weighed <04948> [without weight.]

1 Chronicles 26:32

26:32

relatives .... respected <01121 02428> [men of valour.]

family leaders <07218 01> [chief fathers.]

Reubenites <07206> [Reubenites.]

matters pertaining <01697> [and affairs. Heb. and thing.]

There were more Levites employed as judges with the two tribes and half on the other side of Jordan, than with all the rest of the tribes; there were two thousand seven hundred, whereas on the west side of Jordan there were only one thousand seven hundred. Either those remote tribes were not so well furnished as the rest with judges of their own, or because they lay farthest from Jerusalem, on the borders of the neighbouring nations, and were thus much in danger of being infected with idolatry, they most needed the help of Levites to prevent their running into the abominations of the idolaters.
