[1:5]  1 tn Heb “son of Haggith,” but since this formula usually designates the father (who in this case was David), the translation specifies that David was Adonijah’s father.

[1:5]  2 tn Heb “lifting himself up.”

[1:5]  3 tn Heb “saying.”

[1:5]  4 tn Or “he acquired for himself.”

[1:5]  5 tn Heb “to run ahead of him.”

[6:21]  6 tn Heb “with plated gold” (or perhaps, “with pure gold”).

[6:21]  7 tn Heb “it.”

[7:48]  11 tn Heb “the bread of the face [or presence].” Many recent English versions employ “the bread of the Presence,” although this does not convey much to the modern reader.

[11:6]  16 tn Heb “in the eyes of the Lord.”

[11:6]  17 tn The idiomatic statement reads in Hebrew, “he did not fill up after.”

[11:22]  21 tn Heb “Indeed what do you lack with me, that now you are seeking to go to your land?”

[11:22]  22 tn Heb “and he said.”

[11:22]  23 sn So Hadad asked Pharaoh… This lengthy description of Hadad’s exile in Egypt explains why Hadad wanted to oppose Solomon and supports the author’s thesis that his hostility to Solomon found its ultimate source in divine providence. Though Hadad enjoyed a comfortable life in Egypt, when the Lord raised him up (apparently stirring up his desire for vengeance) he decided to leave the comforts of Egypt and return to Edom.

[13:34]  26 tn Heb “house.”

[14:17]  31 tn Heb “went and entered.”

[16:3]  36 tn The traditional view understands the verb בָּעַר (baar) to mean “burn.” However, an alternate view takes בָּעַר (baar) as a homonym meaning “sweep away” (HALOT 146 s.v. II בער). In this case one might translate, “I am ready to sweep away Baasha and his family.” Either metaphor emphasizes the thorough and destructive nature of the coming judgment.

[16:3]  37 tc The Old Greek, Syriac Peshitta, and some mss of the Targum have here “his house.”

[18:30]  41 sn Torn down. The condition of the altar symbolizes the spiritual state of the people.

[20:15]  46 tn Heb “he”; the referent (Ahab) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[20:15]  47 tn Heb “after them he assembled all the people, all the sons of Israel, seven thousand.”
