12:28 After the king had consulted with his advisers, ¹  he made two golden calves. Then he said to the people, ²  “It is too much trouble for you to go up to Jerusalem. Look, Israel, here are your gods who brought you up from the land of Egypt.”

1 Kings 22:30

22:30 The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “I will disguise myself and then enter ³  into the battle; but you wear your royal robes.” So the king of Israel disguised himself and then entered into the battle.

[12:28]  ¹ tn The words “with his advisers” are supplied in the translation for clarification.

[12:28]  ² tn Heb “to them,” although this may be a corruption of “to the people.” Cf. the Old Greek translation.

[22:30]  ³ tn The Hebrew verbal forms could be imperatives (“Disguise yourself and enter”), but this would make no sense in light of the immediately following context. The forms are better interpreted as infinitives absolute functioning as cohortatives. See IBHS 594 §35.5.2a. Some prefer to emend the forms to imperfects.
