[8:36]  1 tn The translation understands כִּי (ki) in an emphatic or asseverative sense.

[8:36]  2 tn Heb “the good way in which they should walk.”

[8:36]  3 tn Or “for an inheritance.”

[8:39]  1 tn The words “their sin” are added for clarification.

[8:39]  2 tn Heb “and act and give to each one according to all his ways because you know his heart.” In the Hebrew text vv. 37-39a actually contain one lengthy conditional sentence, which the translation has divided up for stylistic reasons.

[8:39]  3 tn Heb “Indeed you know, you alone, the heart of all the sons of mankind.”

[8:43]  1 tn Heb “and do all which the foreigner calls to [i.e., “requests of”] you.”

[8:43]  2 tn Heb “your name.” See the note on the word “reputation” in v. 41.

[8:43]  3 tn Heb “fear.”

[8:43]  4 tn Heb “that your name is called over this house which I built.” The Hebrew idiom “to call the name over” indicates ownership. See 2 Sam 12:28.

[8:49]  1 tn Heb “their prayer and their request for help.”

[8:49]  2 tn Heb “and accomplish their justice.”

[8:2]  1 sn The festival. This was the Feast of Tabernacles, see Lev 23:34.

[8:2]  2 sn The month Ethanim. This would be September-October in modern reckoning.

[6:21]  1 tn Heb “with plated gold” (or perhaps, “with pure gold”).

[6:21]  2 tn Heb “it.”

[33:13]  1 tn The Hebrew perfect verbal forms in v. 13 state general facts.

[33:13]  2 tn Heb “all the sons of men.”

[113:5]  1 tn Heb “the one who makes high to sit.”

[113:6]  1 tn Heb “the one who makes low to see.”

[123:1]  1 sn Psalm 123. The psalmist, speaking for God’s people, acknowledges his dependence on God in the midst of a crisis.

[123:1]  2 sn The precise significance of this title, which appears in Pss 120-134, is unclear. Perhaps worshipers recited these psalms when they ascended the road to Jerusalem to celebrate annual religious festivals. For a discussion of their background see L. C. Allen, Psalms 101-150 (WBC), 219-21.

[123:1]  3 tn Heb “I lift my eyes.”

[123:1]  4 tn Heb “sitting.” The Hebrew verb יָשַׁב (yashav) is here used metonymically of “sitting enthroned” (see Pss 9:7; 29:10; 55:19; 102:12).

[57:15]  1 tn Heb “the one who dwells forever.” שֹׁכֵן עַד (shokhenad) is sometimes translated “the one who lives forever,” and understood as a reference to God’s eternal existence. However, the immediately preceding and following descriptions (“high and exalted” and “holy”) emphasize his sovereign rule. In the next line, he declares, “I dwell in an exalted and holy [place],” which refers to the place from which he rules. Therefore it is more likely that שֹׁכֵן עַד (shokhenad) means “I dwell [in my lofty palace] forever” and refers to God’s eternal kingship.

[57:15]  2 tn Heb “and also with the crushed and lowly of spirit.” This may refer to the repentant who have humbled themselves (see 66:2) or more generally to the exiles who have experienced discouragement and humiliation.

[57:15]  3 tn Heb “to restore the lowly of spirit and to restore the heart of the crushed.”

[6:9]  1 sn Pray this way. What follows, although traditionally known as the Lord’s prayer, is really the disciples’ prayer. It represents how they are to approach God, by acknowledging his uniqueness and their need for his provision and protection.

[6:9]  2 sn God is addressed in terms of intimacy (Father). The original Semitic term here was probably Abba. The term is a little unusual in a personal prayer, especially as it lacks qualification. It is not the exact equivalent of “daddy” (as is sometimes popularly suggested), but it does suggest a close, familial relationship.

[6:9]  3 tn Grk “hallowed be your name.”
