9:3 The Lord said to him, “I have answered ¹  your prayer and your request for help that you made to me. I have consecrated this temple you built by making it my permanent home; ²  I will be constantly present there. ³

Rehoboam’s Reign over Judah

14:21 Now Rehoboam son of Solomon ruled in Judah. He ⁷  was forty-one years old when he became king and he ruled for seventeen years in Jerusalem, ⁸  the city the Lord chose from all the tribes of Israel to be his home. ⁹  His mother was an Ammonite woman ¹⁰  named Naamah.

[9:3]  ² tn Heb “by placing my name there perpetually” (or perhaps, “forever”).

[9:3]  ³ tn Heb “and my eyes and my heart will be there all the days.”

[11:36]  ⁴ tn Heb “give.”

[11:36]  ⁵ tn Heb “so there might be a lamp for David my servant all the days before me in Jerusalem.” The metaphorical “lamp” symbolizes the Davidic dynasty. Because this imagery is unfamiliar to the modern reader, the translation “so my servant David’s dynasty may continue to serve me” has been used.

[11:36]  ⁶ tn Heb “so there might be a lamp for David my servant all the days before me in Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen for myself to put my name there.”

[14:21]  ⁷ tn Heb “Rehoboam.” The proper name has been replaced by the pronoun (“he”) in the translation for stylistic reasons.
