9:7 then I will remove Israel from the land 1  I have given them, I will abandon this temple I have consecrated with my presence, 2  and Israel will be mocked and ridiculed 3  among all the nations.

1 Kings 14:15

14:15 The Lord will attack Israel, making it like a reed that sways in the water. 4  He will remove Israel from this good land he gave to their ancestors 5  and scatter them beyond the Euphrates River, 6  because they angered the Lord by making Asherah poles. 7

18:1 Some time later, in the third year of the famine, the Lord told Elijah, 8  “Go, make an appearance before Ahab, so I may send rain on the surface of the ground.”

[9:7]  1 tn Heb “I will cut off Israel from upon the surface of the land.”

[9:7]  2 tn Heb “and the temple which I consecrated for my name I will send away from before my face.”

[9:7]  3 tn Heb “will become a proverb and a taunt,” that is, a proverbial example of destruction and an object of reproach.

[14:15]  4 tn The elliptical Hebrew text reads literally “and the Lord will strike Israel as a reed sways in the water.”

[14:15]  5 tn Heb “fathers” (also in vv. 22, 31).

[14:15]  6 tn Heb “the River.” In biblical Hebrew this is a typical reference to the Euphrates River. The name “Euphrates” has been supplied in the translation for clarity.
