1 Samuel 10:2

Context
10:2 When you leave me today, you will find two men near Rachel’s tomb at Zelzah on Benjamin’s border. They will say to you, ‘The donkeys you have gone looking for have been found. Your father is no longer concerned about the donkeys but has become anxious about you two! 1  He is asking, “What should I do about my son?”’

1 Samuel 14:45

Context

14:45 But the army said to Saul, “Should Jonathan, who won this great victory in Israel, die? May it never be! As surely as the Lord lives, not a single hair of his head will fall to the ground! For it is with the help of God that he has acted today.” So the army rescued Jonathan from death. 2

1 Samuel 21:9

1 Samuel 26:19

26:19 So let my lord the king now listen to the words of his servant. If the Lord has incited you against me, may he take delight in 3  an offering. 1 Samuel 28:15

Context
28:15 Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?” Saul replied, “I am terribly troubled! The Philistines are fighting against me and God has turned away from me. He does not answer me – not by the prophets nor by dreams. So I have called on you to tell me what I should do.”

1 Samuel 29:4

Context

29:4 But the leaders of the Philistines became angry with him and said 5  to him, “Send the man back! Let him return to the place that you assigned him! [10:2]  1 sn In the Hebrew text the pronoun you is plural, suggesting that Saul’s father was concerned about his son and the servant who accompanied him.

[14:45]  2 tn Heb “and he did not die.”

[26:19]  3 tn Heb “may he smell.” The implication is that Saul should seek to appease God, for such divine instigation to evil would a sign of God’s disfavor. For a fuller discussion of this passage see R. B. Chisholm, Jr., “Does God Deceive?” BSac 155 (1998): 19-21.

[26:19]  4 tn Heb “but if the sons of men.”

[29:4]  4 tn Heb “and the leaders of the Philistines said.”

[29:4]  5 tn Heb “so that he might not become.”

[29:4]  6 tn Or perhaps, “our men.” On this use of the demonstrative pronoun see Joüon 2:532 §143.e.
