1 Samuel 10:5
Context10:5 Afterward you will go to Gibeah of God, where there are Philistine officials. 1 When you enter the town, you will meet a company of prophets coming down from the high place. They will have harps, tambourines, flutes, and lyres, and they will be prophesying.
1 Samuel 13:4
Context13:4 All Israel heard this message, 2 “Saul has attacked the Philistine outpost, and now Israel is repulsive 3 to the Philistines!” So the people were summoned to join 4 Saul at Gilgal.
1 Samuel 13:23--14:1
Context13:23 A garrison of the Philistines had gone out to the pass at Micmash. 14:1 Then one day Jonathan son of Saul said to his armor bearer, 5 “Come on, let’s go over to the Philistine garrison that is opposite us.” But he did not let his father know.
1 Samuel 14:6
Context14:6 Jonathan said to his armor bearer, “Come on, let’s go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised men. Perhaps the Lord will intervene 6 for us. Nothing can prevent the Lord from delivering, whether by many or by a few.”
[10:5] 1 tn Or “sentries.” Some translate “outpost” (NIV) or “garrison” (NAB, NRSV, NLT) here (see 1 Sam 13:3). The noun is plural in the Hebrew text, but the LXX and other ancient witnesses read a singular noun here.
[13:4] 2 tn The words “this message” are supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.
[13:4] 3 tn Heb “stinks.” The figurative language indicates that Israel had become repulsive to the Philistines.
[13:4] 4 tn Heb “were summoned after.”
[14:1] 5 tn Or “the servant who was carrying his military equipment” (likewise in vv. 6, 7, 12, 13, 14).
