[7:8]  1 tn Heb “turned [the] back.”

[7:9]  2 tn Heb “and cut off our name.”

[7:9]  3 tn Heb “What will you do for your great name?”

[7:2]  4 map For location see Map5 B2; Map6 E1; Map7 E1; Map8 E3; Map10 A2; Map11 A1.

[7:2]  5 map For the location of Bethel see Map4 G4; Map5 C1; Map6 E3; Map7 D1; Map8 G3.

[5:9]  6 tc The translation reads with the Qere and the ancient versions וָאוֹמַר (vaomar, “and I said”) rather than the MT Kethib, וַיֹּאמֶר (vayyomer, “and he said”).

[5:9]  7 tn Heb “not good.” The statement “The thing…is not good” is an example of tapeinosis, a figurative expression which emphasizes the intended point (“The thing…is wrong!”) by negating its opposite.

[5:9]  8 tn Heb “[should you not] walk.”

[44:13]  9 tn The prefixed verbal form is a preterite (without vav [ו] consecutive).

[44:13]  10 tn Heb “an [object of] taunting and [of] mockery to those around us.”

[74:18]  11 tn Heb “remember this.”

[74:18]  12 tn Or “[how] the enemy insults the Lord.”

[79:12]  13 tn Heb “Return to our neighbors sevenfold into their lap.” The number seven is used rhetorically to express the thorough nature of the action. For other rhetorical/figurative uses of the Hebrew phrase שִׁבְעָתַיִם (shivatayim, “seven times”) see Gen 4:15, 24; Ps 12:6; Prov 6:31; Isa 30:26.

[79:12]  14 tn Heb “their reproach with which they reproached you, O Lord.”

[9:16]  15 tn Or “righteousness.”

[9:16]  16 tn Heb “your anger and your rage.” The synonyms are joined here to emphasize the degree of God’s anger. This is best expressed in English by making one of the terms adjectival (cf. NLT “your furious anger”; CEV “terribly angry”).

[2:19]  17 tn Heb “answered and said.”

[2:19]  18 tn Heb “Look! I am sending grain to you.” The participle used in the Hebrew text seems to suggest imminent action.

[2:19]  19 tc One of the Qumran manuscripts (4QXXIIc) inserts “and you will eat” before “and you will be fully satisfied” (the reading of the MT, LXX).
