[14:25] 1 tn Heb “all the land.”
[14:25] 2 tn Heb “the surface of the field.”
[4:5] 3 tn Heb “shouted [with] a great shout.”
[13:3] 5 tn Or perhaps “struck down the Philistine official.” See the note at 1 Sam 10:5. Cf. TEV “killed the Philistine commander.”
[13:3] 6 tn Heb “blew the ram’s horn in.”
[14:15] 8 tn Heb “and it was by the fear of God.” The translation understands this to mean that God was the source or cause of the fear experienced by the Philistines. This seems to be the most straightforward reading of the sentence. It is possible, however, that the word “God” functions here simply to intensify the accompanying word “fear,” in which one might translate “a very great fear” (cf. NAB, NRSV). It is clear that on some occasions that the divine name carries such a superlative nuance. For examples see Joüon 2:525 §141.n.
[14:29] 9 tc The LXX reads “saw.” See v. 27.
[28:13] 13 tn Heb “gods.” The modifying participle (translated “coming up”) is plural, suggesting that underworld spirits are the referent. But in the following verse Saul understands the plural word to refer to a singular being. The reference is to the spirit of Samuel.
[6:5] 15 tn Heb “your mice.” A Qumran
[6:5] 16 tn Heb “Perhaps he will lighten his hand from upon you and from upon your gods and from upon your land.”
[27:8] 17 tn Heb “from where you come.”
[28:9] 19 tn Heb “how he has cut off.”
[28:9] 20 tn See the note at v. 3.
[30:16] 21 tn Heb “him”; the referent (David) has been specified in the translation for clarity.
